In an interview with the New York Times about Jones's new book Time Is Tight, Berninger revealed that he wanted to work with the producer because he needed someone who could corral 20 guest musicians. He also considers Willie Nelson's Jones-produced Stardust one of his favourite albums.
"When I was growing up, my dad only had about five records," he said. "I remember Judy Collins, Roberta Flack, Waylon Jennings, and I remember Stardust."
Not too many details about Berninger's upcoming album have been revealed, but he did make a vague announcement on Instagram.
In addition to revealing Jones's involvement, Berninger announced the album title and hinted that it will feature "lots of brilliant friends who can play instermints."

In addition to his work with the National, Berninger has fronted EL VY and released collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers, Andrew Bird and Joy Williams.
Kind, patient, visionary genius @bookertjonesmusic produced and arranged my solo record. It's called Serpentine Prison.🐍 More about it soon but basically I'm the luckiest man in the universe with lots of brilliant friends who can play instermints.
