DJ Kwe Rifflandia, Victoria BC, September 14
Published Sep 15, 2017DJ Kwe was a treat for those in the know and pushed into Lucky Bar for her Thursday night (September 14) set. The multidisciplinary artist was the first Indigenous female to turn pro electronic DJ in Canada, and she won an invitational DJ contest in 2004, also stepping up as the only woman to compete.
After nearly two decades in the music industry, she's made remarkable progress, launching her own record label to showcase Indigenous artists and continuously pushing the boundaries of art. DJ Kwe pulled out the vinyl, mixing old school jams with lush electronic music as the crowd trickled in, the appeal and adventure of monstrous outdoor night venue Electric Avenue likely keeping some away. Kwe's energy was incredible, palpable despite the lackluster crowd — an artist visibly in her element, enjoying herself.
Though the mashup set was a bit unexpected given her deep history in the industry, she was hardly a disappointment. Snow's "Informer" bumped up alongside Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," which bumped up alongside Edwin Starr's "War" and the Fugees' "Ready or Not," and they were all accompanied by deep, dirty electro drops. It was a little bit of history in the heart of Victoria.
