Wolf Parade Pop Montreal, Montreal QC, Sept. 30
Published Oct 01, 2018It was a special kind of reunion Sunday night — not only because Wolf Parade are back together, but because of where they were playing. This was the last of a four-show run at La Sala Rossa, where, along with smaller sister venue Casa del Popolo, they cemented their place in Montreal indie rock history over a decade ago. They'd turned the place into their home over the course of the festival, a POP Montreal residency that ended later in Sala's basement, with some Moonface songs by Spencer Krug.
It was clear how much they loved being back on that stage, and we all felt lucky to be treated to a small club show from a band that looms so large over the city. In some ways it was like the Unicorns' one-day blowout at Metropolis in 2014, but made more special for its intimacy — one final example of how well POP balances indie nostalgia with a sense of discovery.
The high point was the encore, featuring classics like "I'll Believe In Anything" and "Dinner Bells," but their whole set of songs new and old was incredible. Wolf Parade are back in fine form, post-hiatus, and here's hoping that continues for years to come.
